Summary of Umrao Jan Ada Novel by Mirza Hadi:

This novel tells the story of Umrao Jan Ada, a famous “Tawaif” (courtesan) living in Lucknow during the mid-nineteenth century. The book shows how the society in Lucknow was hypocritical in terms of its social and moral standards during that time. Umrao Jan Ada was originally named Amiran and came from a modest family.

Her father testified in court against a criminal named Dilawar Khan, which led to Dilawar Khan being sent to prison for 12 years. However, when Dilawar Khan was released from prison, he took revenge by kidnapping Amiran. He then sold her to a well-known Tawaif named Khanum Jan for a sum of one hundred and fifty rupees, on the suggestion of a friend.

Under Khanum Jan’s guidance, Amiran learned to dance and sing, which transformed her into the famous courtesan, Umrao Jan Ada. The rest of the story follows Umrao Jan Ada’s interactions and experiences with various other characters in the novel, such as Bua Hussaini, Bismillah Jaan (Khanum Jan’s daughter), Gohar Mirza, Nawab Sultan Mirza, and Ram Dai.

The novel’s storyline has been adapted into several movies and TV series by both Pakistan and India. In 1972, a Pakistani film with the same title was released based on the novel. It has also inspired other films like “Mehndi” (1958) and “Umrao Jaan” (2006).
